-Galster Park Recreational Trails-

Galster Park was originally designed to serve the City of West Covina as a regional park. Beginning in the 1960s, land that eventually totaled more than 42 acres was deeded to the City for that purpose. In 1971, the park's planned campground and hiking trails improvements were completed, and the park was formally dedicated. Age, erosion, weather, and use have since caused these resources to become overgrown with vegetation and to deteriorate.

In 2002, the City received funding grants in the amount of approximately $890,000 from County and State agencies that will significantly contribute toward the improvements that need to be made at Galster Park. Grant sources include:
  • $476,000 Rivers and Mountains Conservancy
  • $160,221 Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District
  • $255,073 Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant

Improvements are to include restoration of the park's existing hiking trails and facilities, and the development of the park's wilderness habitats to encourage public educational participation and enjoyment.

In 2003, conceptual design work began to update the Galster Park Master Plan to reflect the concerns and suggestions of the modern surrounding community. That preliminary concept work was completed, and then the Updated Master Plan was presented to both the Planning Commission and Community Services Commission at a joint meeting held on March 22, 2005. At that meeting, the Commissioners recommended approval of the plan to the City Council.

The City Council approved the Galster Park Master Plan and the Galster Park Rehabilitation Project, which included as many of the Master Plan recommendations as funding would allow, on April 19, 2005.

Construction started on the Galster Project in April 2006. The Project is expected to be completed in October 2006.
