West Covina Sportsplex Project Update
The West Covina Sportsplex is a 315-acre development that will bring much needed recreation and commercial retail business to the center of our City. Once a former landfill, the City of West Covina has taken a proactive role to convert a site that has negatively impacted our community over the past 50 years into a viable, revenue generating and exciting development that will serve to benefit our City many years into the future.
The West Covina Sportsplex is made up of three components, which includes the Commercial development, Big League Dreams Sports Park, and a Public Golf Course.
The 43-acre site commercial development is an exciting component of the Sportsplex project, which will have about 300,000 square feet of new high quality commercial retail. The commercial are will include a Target, Home Depot, as well as various other specialty shops and restaurants. This new exciting commercial development is expected to open in Spring 2007.
On June 29th, 2006 the West Covina City Council approved awarding the Big League Dreams construction contract to Mallcraft Inc.
The Big League Dreams Sports Park provides baseball and softball players with the feeling that they are playing at professional ball venues. With stadium features and high quality ball fields that replicate sporting landmarks like Yankee Stadium, Tiger Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium and Edison Field. The Big League Dreams Sports Park will be a City park. It will be owned by the City and maintained and operated under contract by Big League Dreams.
The design for West Covina Sportsplex's Big League Dreams Sports Park has been completed and the construction of the park will begin in the summer of 2006 and be completed by the fall of 2007.

The municipal golf course is being designed by well-known golf course designer, Schmidt-Curley, and will include:
- An 18-hole championship golf course
- A 17,000 square foot mission style clubhouse
- A 300 seat capacity restaurant/banquet facility and,
- 25-30 station lighted driving range
The municipal golf course will have 8 of its 18 holes on the top deck of the closed Class III landfill and will provide some of the most breathtaking views from a public golf course in the San Gabriel Valley.
Grading for the project began last year. To date, the City has moved dirt in order to create the pads for the commercial portion of the project. Additionally, the City continues to move dirt from the western and northwestern ridges of the proposed BLD Sports Park site to the golf course site located north of the Class III landfill. An estimate of over 4 million cubic yards of soil will need to be moved for the entire project.
There is also a lot of activity associated with the under grounding of utilities, such as water, electricity and cable lines along Azusa Avenue. In addition to the utilities on site, the City worked with Edison to have the major power lines on Azusa, adjacent to the development, placed underground.
The West Covina Sportsplex will turn a former landfill into a marquee recreation facility and shopping center, making it a focal point and destination attraction for the City of West Covina and San Gabriel Valley.
