West Covina Sportsplex Project Update
July 2006

Week of July 24th, 2006

The final stages of the mass grading for the Big League Dreams Baseball Facilities are being completed. This work prepares the building site to construct the six Replica Baseball Stadiums and other family facilities including the restaurants, multipurpose indoor soccer pavilion, picnic areas and tot lot play areas.

In addition, the new street entrance from Azusa Avenue has been graded and in the near future the new street will be completed along with a entrance sign for the City of West Covina Sportsplex.

The fence and gate for street "A" has been installed and the new streets are being cleaned up and brought to grade.

Planned foundation locations where the Sports Park outfield walls will be constructed are being bored to determine the soils condition and a section of BKK's 60" storm drain line is being replaced.

Week of July 17th, 2006

As City maintenance crews removed several drums of soil from the proposed commercial site, other construction efforts included the mass grading of the Big League Dreams Sport Park site. New streets and driveways were also surveyed. And an aerial flyover of the entire landfill site was conducted in order to provide a bird's eye view of the most recent changes that have occurred during construction.

Soil being taken from the upper detention basin is being used as vegetative cover on the remaining pockets of the top deck.

Week of July 10th, 2006

With the top deck clay stockpile cap and vegetative cover substantially complete, construction workers shifted their focus, in part, to burying the equipment yard and cleanup. In addition, workers continue expanding the detention basin by removing vegetative soil use on the top deck. The new Sportsplex entry drive off Azusa Avenue is being prepared for paving, and a storm drain is being installed along the West end of the deep canyon.

On June 29th, 2006 the West Covina City Council approved awarding the Big League Dreams Construction contract to Mallcraft Inc. Meanwhile, mass grading efforts neared completion as the Big League Dreams site was being prepared for vertical construction to begin in mid-August. Other construction developments on the landfill site included the enlargement of the upper detention basin and the capping of the top deck with clay.
