Steve Herfert was elected to the West Covina City Council in 1990. His slogan, “a voice of the people” has always been the guiding light in his leadership role as Mayor and City Councilman in West Covina. This leadership role has led him to become one of the most respected leaders in the San Gabriel Valley. Steve’s visionary leadership has been the underlying influence for all the positive outcomes West Covina residents appreciate and enjoy today.
Steve was the second of five children born to Bob and Elaine Herfert. He learned family values and service to others from his parents. He received his education through the West Covina Unified School District, Mt. San Antonio College, and Cal Poly Pomona. He has been employed by Southern California Edison for 30 years as a Scientist.
From his early days of playing on the playgrounds of West Covina, Steve developed a desire to help people enjoy their leisure time. He became a role model and leader, working in the West Covina Recreation Department. He realized it was smarter "to build children than to repair adults".
In his five terms on the Council, Steve has taken leadership roles in all facets of government, particularly public safety. West Covina’s Police and Fire Department’s are the most respected public safety units in Southern California. Steve’s twenty years of leadership reflect in the quality of service provided to West Covina residents.
In 1994 Steve was successful in closing the BKK landfill and preventing an environmental disaster. After closure he led the way in transitioning the site to the Big League Dreams/West Covina Heights project. In 2009 this project was awarded the prestigious Phoenix Award as the Nations #1 Brownfield remediation project.
Steve has been a creative leader who has accepted and successfully completed many challenges. He led the City to build a new senior center, gym, and to add lights to every little league park. As Steve stated during each of his four terms as Mayor, “we need to provide facilities that build family values”.
He believes taxpayers have been overburdened, and he seeks relief in the form of tax credits and reductions. He believes in less government regulation and the concept of cities and schools working more closely together (community schools). He believes education is vital to the success of our nation and sits on regional boards that encourage job training and educational advancements.
Steve Herfert is best described as a “Working Leader” who doesn’t play political games. Steve Herfert can be contacted through City Hall, 626-939-8401.
