Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Disposal
Download this year's West Covina HHW and E-Waste Round-Up Event flyer and map here.
It is illegal to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in the regular trash, as it is toxic and will pollute the environment. The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County conduct Household Hazardous Waste (including electronic waste) Free Roundups throughout the Los Angeles County.
A Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Event is a one-day drive-through where residents can drive to a specific location to drop-off their hazardous waste. These events are free, open to the public, and usually held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For information on HHW or for upcoming Roundups, call CLEAN LA (1(888) 253-2652), the City of West Covina Environmental Management Department at (626) 939-8411, or visit www.888CleanLA.com.
The City of West Covina will host its next local Household Hazardous and E-Waste
Round-Up on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
Examples of Household Hazardous Waste:
Brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, turpentine, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides, or weed killer, household batteries and car batteries, pool chemicals, motor oil, oil filters, expired pharmaceuticals, anti-freeze, and fluorescent light bulbs.
What is Electronic Waste (E-Waste)?
The term "e-waste" is applied to consumer electronic equipment that is no longer wanted. Since electronics may contain lead, copper, and other heavy metals or potentially toxic substances, it is critical that any e-waste be disposed of properly.
Examples of E-Waste:
Television sets, TV/VCR combos. Computer equipment such as keyboards, CPUs, monitors, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners or any other computer peripheral. Personal Electronics such as stereos, cell phones, calculators, telephones, alarm clocks, radios, microwaves, answering machines, etc.
These items CANNOT be accepted at the Roundup:
- Explosives
- Ammunition
- Radioactive materials
- Trash
- Tires
- Business e-waste
Please Note: For refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers or other "bulky" items contact Athens Services at least one day before your regular collection day to schedule a pick-up. Limit of five (5) items per week. Please call (626) 336-6100
Universal Waste (U-Waste)
As of February 9, 2006, households are no longer allowed to place U-Waste such as batteries (AA, AAA, 6 volt, etc.), light bulbs, electronic devices and items containing mercury. That's because chemicals from Universal Waste can eventually find their way into the environment, contaminating our air, our water, and even the food we eat.
Examples of Universal Waste:
Household Batteries such as Cell Batteries, Hearing Aid Batteries; Fluorescent Tubes and Bulbs and other Mercury Containing Lamps: Neon Bulbs; Mercury Containing Devices: Thermostats, Switches, Thermometer etc.
Medical Sharps (used hypodermic needles)
To ensure appropriate disposal of sharps waste and to protect the public from potential exposure to contagious, Governor Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 1305, which makes it illegal for residents to place home-generated sharps waste in trash, recycling, and green waste containers after
September 1, 2008. This state law also require sharps waste to be collected and transported in approved sharps containers.
Currently, the County of Los Angeles accepts sharps waste at its weekly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events and at the City of Los Angeles' permanent collection centers. Soon, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works plans to enhance its existing Sharps Collection Program for home-generated sharps by purchasing State-approved sharps disposal containers. These containers will be offered to all County residents free of charge. The County's HHW/EWaste collection events, AVECC, and the City of Los Angeles' permanent centers, will continue to serve as collection outlets for the containers.
