COMMUNITY PLANNER
Job Summary
Under general supervision, collects and tabulates data relating to urban land use, housing, population, transportation, and related socio-economic characteristics of the community; assists in the analysis of this data for general community development and redevelopment purposes; performs a variety and range of professional community development and redevelopment work; and does related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data relating to social and economic trends within the community.
- Responsible for completion of projects as assigned, including the writing of reports and various research studies.
- Collects, tabulates, and analyzes data in working with other public and private agencies and their representative personnel.
- Correlates research and reports in cooperation with other departments and agencies pertaining to the various community development and redevelopment problems affecting the City.
- May be required to represent the City at citizens meetings to inform them of various plans and projects, and to attend various meetings of the City Council, Community Development Commission, Planning Commission and other public meetings.
- Prepares reports regarding applications for federal, state, regional and local grants and programs.
- Compiles related information and makes recommendations in line with City and Agency policies
- Inspects projects and areas involved in such applications to collect data.
- Assists in implementation phases of grants and programs.
- Answers inquiries from the public regarding policies and programs of the City and the Agency.
- Works closely with representatives of the City departments, i.e. Engineering, Building and Planning.
- Responds to requests for information and assistance from members of the public at the counter.
- Assigned as planner-on-duty one day a week.
- Conducts field inspections to monitor progress of work on site.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Knowledge of principles, techniques and objectives of community development and redevelopment; of statistics, graphic presentations and research methods; a knowledge of graphic illustrations and modeling techniques, of basic economics, sociology, public administration, and engineering design as related to community development law and regulations; knowledge of sources of community development and redevelopment information, including information on land use, housing, population, transportation, and economics. Knowledge of report preparation techniques; application of technical materials; and knowledge of effective communication techniques.
Knowledge of computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications and photographic skills also highly desirable.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in public administration, planning, architecture, economics or related fields.
Experience: One year of administrative or planning experience.
Additional graduate training in fields basic to urban planning
and administration is desirable.
Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
