COMMUNICATIONS SUPERVISOR

Job Summary

Under general direction, supervises the staff of the Communications Center on an assigned shift; plans and coordinates the routine and emergency operations of communications via radio, telephone, computer aided dispatch, emergency alarm systems, and associated equipment; prepares work schedules; acts as a back-up for operators during emergencies or peak load periods; serves as relief operator; and does related work as required. As a member of Department management, assists in the administration of the Communications Department and serves on interdepartmental committees and/or task forces as may be assigned.

Essential Functions
  1. Acts on assigned shift as supervisor of the Communications Center and is responsible for the efficient handling of the city's communication systems, preparation of reports, logs, and filing necessary to the operation.

  2. Acts as relief operator as circumstances dictate.

  3. Assures the prompt response to emergency calls and dispatches appropriate Fire, Police, and/or other city equipment as needed to handle emergencies in the field.

  4. Prepares and administers personnel performance evaluations on all subordinates; supervises the training of new personnel, and provides counseling to both training operator and trainee as necessary.

  5. Reviews and recommends disposition of personnel requests for time off and changes to work assignments.

  6. Coordinates the repair of City owned communications equipment and systems.

Non-essential Functions
  1. Depending upon assignment, monitors the repair of City owned communications equipment.

  2. May authorize, within assigned responsibilities expenditures for contract repairs of communications equipment beyond the scope of fixed contract rates.

  3. May recommend the development, modification, or elimination of departmental administrative and operating policies and procedures.

  4. May participate in the departmental budget process by identifying and recommending the prioritization of departmental needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge

Knowledge of office procedures, computer aided dispatch, and principles of administration, supervision, and training.

Ability to react quickly and think clearly in emergencies; record spoken information legibly and accurately; broadcast radio instructions with clear enunciation in a well modulated voice and supervise subordinates.

Experience: Three years, experience in the operation of a computerized radio console, in a law enforcement or fire protection agency.

Training: Must be able to keyboard at least 35 wpm.

Working Conditions: Will be assigned one of two 12 hour shifts: days or nights.
