COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN
Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs technical and detailed maintenance, installation, and repairs to City-owned two-way radio, data, visual, sound, recording, and other electronic and electromechanical devices and equipment; and does related Work as required.
Essential Functions
- Installs, maintains, and repairs City owned two-way radios, electronic light bars, sirens, public address systems, shotgun racks, and other similar electronic and electromechanical devices, equipment, and systems.
- Installs and maintains electromechanical alarm systems, computer network, distribution systems, telephone interface devices, and alarm monitor panels.
- Makes alterations and adjustments to such equipment in accordance with good electronic engineering practices and manufacturers' specifications not requiring an FCC license.
- Assists with the planning, design, procurement and installation of mobile communications, visual, video, and sound systems.
Non-essential Functions
- Maintains appropriate logs and records on systems operating performance and repairs.
- Performs related duties as required, including service as standby (call-out) technician during off duty hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation and maintenance of modern radio-telephone (LF, HF, VHF, UHF), visual, and sound equipment; including ancillary equipment and anthena theory, and the methods and material used in the construction and repair of such equipment. Working knowledge of radio and telephone data modems and data network interface devices. Working knowledge and ability to use the tools and equipment used in radio, visual, sound, and data equipment repairs; knowledge of the Rules and Regulations of the Federal Communications Commission pertaining to the operation and maintenance of radio transmitting and receiving equipment.
Experience: Two years of experience in the maintenance, construction, installation, and design of varied radio, visual, sound and data equipment.
Trade school or college education in electronics may be substituted for the above requirements on the basis of 1 year being equivalent to 6 months experience.
Licenses: A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
