DAY CARE DIRECTOR

Job Summary

Under general supervision plans, organizes, promotes and conducts the child care program and does related work as required.

Essential Functions
  1. Plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates the day care program.

  2. Assists in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of part-time personnel in the day care program.

  3. Coordinates and conducts the programs for the children at the day care center.

  4. Recommends hiring, transfers, suspension or promotions of part-time personnel.

  5. Works closely with parents to promote an understanding of growth and development of their child.

  6. Provides direct supervision of Day Care Teachers Assistants working in the day cares.

  7. Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates department staff .

  8. Assists in the development of each child.

  9. Participates in the development and assessment of annual department goals and objectives for the day care program.

  10. Maintains the records for the day care program, such as billings.

  11. Prepares routine and special reports.

  12. May perform other duties in support of the Community Services Department as assigned including but not limited to: city-wide events, day care, youth and adult sports, teen programs, recreation classes, aquatics, facility management, senior citizen programs, and other related services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Leadership and educational techniques and methodology, including evaluation, planning, organizing, and conducting activities for children K-12 years old in a day care program.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively with children ages K-12 years old and their parents; work effectively with other employees, and the public; supervise Day Care Teachers, Assistants, and lead and instruct a wide range of activities; act as site director as needed. Bilingual ability in English/Spanish is desirable.

Education and Experience Guidelines

Qualifying for consideration in the selection process will be based on the description listed above under Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, and any combination of education and experience as described below.

Education and Experience: Qualified candidates must meet ONE of the following requirements:
  1. High school graduation or GED. Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in Early Childhood Education at an accredited or approved college or university including 3 semester units in administration or staff relations and at least four years of teaching experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program.

  2. Hold an Associates' degree or 60 units from an accredited or approved college or university with a major or emphasis in Early Childhood Education or child development including 3 units in administration or staff relations and 2 years of teaching experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program.

  3. Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited or approved college or university with a major or emphasis in Early Childhood Education or child development including 3 units in administration or staff relations and at least 1 year teaching experience at a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program.

Licenses/Certificates

A valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Possession of an American Red Cross or any other Community Services Department approved accredited certification in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer is required.

Physical Profile - Category II

Positions in this category require moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or climb, which involve the safeguarding of individuals, public and property.
