ELECTRICIAN I, II
Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs skilled electrical tasks in the maintenance, replacement, and repair of traffic signal systems, street lighting systems, and electrical systems and equipment in various City buildings and facilities; and performs related duties as required. The Electrician I is the entry level class and performs work under more closely supervised circumstances.
Essential Functions
- Installs and maintains street lighting fixtures and traffic signal systems.
- Installs and replaces lights, and lighting systems in community and other public buildings, parks, playgrounds, and City facilities.
- Installs cabling and wiring for communications systems.
- Uses mechanical boom truck to make aerial repairs and to replace street lights and other-overhead electrical fixtures.
- Maintains and repairs, a variety of electrical fixtures, appliances, circuits, motors, and water pumping facilities.
- Utilizes equipment to dig trenches; makes minor repairs to equipment and tools.
Non-essential Functions
- May supervise and train skilled and unskilled workers in the electrical trade.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges and Abilities
Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical trade; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; electrical codes and other applicable standards and regulations.
Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and schematic diagrams of circuitry; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with hand tools and testing equipment characteristic of the trade; and supervise helpers assigned to assist on various projects.
Working Conditions: Incumbents must be able to distinguish color
coded wires; frequently lift weights in excess of 50 pounds; work in confined spaces, climb ladders, scaffolds, and boom trucks; stand for long periods, work in various weather temperatures.
Education: Coursework in electricity and electrical code highly desirable.
Experience: Three years journey-level experience in electrical systems maintenance or installation. The Electrician I must work at least one year at that level to qualify for the II.
License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
