EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I AND II
Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs a variety of general, heavy-skilled or semi-skilled duties in the servicing, repair, and adjustments of automobiles, trucks, construction, equipment, pumps, fire equipment and other related equipment powered by gasoline and diesel fuels, performs related duties as required.
Class Characteristics
Equipment Mechanic I: Incumbents in this class perform semi-skilled mechanic work and may advance to the journey level class of Equipment Mechanic II after one year of experience and satisfactory performance.
Equipment Mechanic II: Incumbents perform work independently with considerable latitude for determining work methods and materials.
Essential Functions
- Examines and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles, construction equipment, and fire equipment.
- Makes major and minor mechanical repairs; disassembles, repairs, replaces work parts, fits new parts, and adjusts water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, differentials, brakes and steering gear.
- Tunes up engine, takes compression tests; repairs standard, electronic, and computerized ignition systems and adjusts timing and valves; replaces or adjusts emission control systems.
- Repairs, vacuums and recharges air conditioning systems; check tests electrical charging systems such as voltage output and ampere draws; checks lights and wiring, and performs necessary repairs.
- Performs front end alignment and wheel balancing; repairs or replaces exhaust systems, ignition and door locks, window vents and regulators, dash gauges, trunk and glove compartment components; installs special equipment such as extra lights, light bars, sirens, and related components.
- Services, repairs, and maintains power lawn mowers, small gasoline engines, pumps and miscellaneous equipment and tools.
Non-essential Functions
- Performs general welding and fabrication of parts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledges
General knowledge of techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel powered equipment and related components, including engines, carburetors, and electrical systems; theory, care and operation of gasoline and diesel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; methods, materials, tools and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; preventive maintenance inspection methods.
Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work; repair and overhaul gasoline and diesel powered equipment and related components with a minimum of supervision; understand and follow oral and written directions; prepare simple records such as completing work orders and logging completed work in individual vehicle folders.
Experience:
Equipment Mechanic 1: One year of experience as a full service automobile mechanic or three years of experience as an automotive service worker or mechanics helper.
Equipment Mechanic II: One year or experience as an Equipment Mechanic I with the City of West Covina.
License: Must have a valid Class A and C California Driver's license, and a satisfactory driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents must be able to perform heavy tasks related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment which may include lifting of objects weighing more than 50 pounds and regular exposure to grease and machinery. Physical demands require bending, stooping, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
