-Program Components-
Museum Docent Association
Much of the programming at the museum will be presented by the volunteer members of the museum's docent association. This program component has been designed to further enhance the concept of presenting a "living" historical experience to students and visitors.
If you're interested in becoming a Hurst Ranch docent, please call (626) 813-0116.
Student Field Trips: Grades 3 & 4
These field trips will begin with a tour of the museum and garden by docents. Students will "journey back" to pioneer times through discussion about a day in the life of an eight or nine year old child at the end of the 19th century.
Students will experience what that child's life was like through The Barn's Pioneer Life hand-on learning centers. The children will wash clothes on a scrub board, pump water with a pitcher pump, sharpen a tool on a grinding wheel, play with pioneer toys, pitch hay, grind corn and press cider, and create crafts with walnuts that they will take home to commemorate the experience.
Student Field Trips: Grades 5 & 6
Depending upon the season, the students will either plant seeds or pick vegetables, learning about farming cycles. The students will also participate in science-based experiments and craft making that are related to farming.
