CITY OF WEST COVINA NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT FOR GALSTER WILDERNESS PARK MUSEUM DISPLAY GRANT APPLICATION

WEST COVINA, California - The City of West Covina's Community Services Foundation has posted a grant application for $9,700 on the Hamburger Helper "Help My Hometown" website to fund museum displays for the new Nature Center at Galster Wilderness Park. If awarded funding, the monies would be used to purchase interactive displays as well as instructional materials.

The City needs the community's support for this project. Hamburger Helper will be making $15,000 in monthly awards through May. We are asking community members to post online comments supporting this project by following these simple instructions:
  • Visit www.myhometownhelper.com
  • Select "Find a Project"
  • Select "California" and enter "West Covina" for Search Criteria
  • Select "Museum Display..." and cast your vote

Items to be purchased may include display cases, nature specimens and local wildlife taxidermy displays including animal skins, botany displays, insect lifecycle displays, reptile & amphibian skeletons, animal skull replicas, rattlesnake skins & rattles, fossils, a solar system model, rock & mineral collections, recycling displays, watershed and other ecological displays, arrowheads, and native tools.

Galster Wilderness Park is the only remaining wilderness area in the region and is 42 acres in size. The City has recently completed the restoration of the park's hiking trails and the development of the Park's wilderness habitat. In addition, a trailer will be placed on the site to house a nature program. This new facility will strengthen community image and sense of place, increase cultural unity, protect environmental resources and provide positive recreational experiences for the children of West Covina and surrounding communities.

Additional information may be obtained by calling the Community Services Department at (626) 939-8430.

Visit the Galster Park page on the San Gabriel Mountains Regional Conservancy web site at www.sgmrc.org/galster.
