WEST COVINA POLICE CONDUCTING CHECKPOINTS

WEST COVINA, CA - West Covina residents can look forward to safer streets as Officers conduct checkpoints on May 12, 2007, targeting two types of illegal drivers.

"Our goal is to reduce the threat to public safety posed by drunk drivers and unlicensed drivers," said Lieutenant Mark Dettor, "and these checkpoints target those exact problems."

Wherever checkpoints are regularly instituted, alcohol-related crash rates have been seen to drop up to 20 percent. The primary reason for checkpoints is public awareness. Sober drivers have the message reinforced while those who might drink and drive are reminded to designate a sober driver or take a taxi.

Funding for this comes from a $116,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

For more information, contact Lieutenant Mark Dettor, PIO at 626 939-8501.
