West Covina Fire Department rescues man from chimney
WEST COVINA, CA - On Sunday, August 26, 2007, at 0452 hrs (4:52 AM) the City of West Covina Communications Center dispatched firefighters and police officers from the City of West Covina to a man stuck in the chimney of a single story residence at 2105 S. Anson Way (x Woolsey, TG 638H6).
The Homeowner was awakened by the calls for help from a 34 year old male stuck 10' down in the chimney. Unknown how long the man was stuck in the chimney before being noticed . The man was wedged just above the flue baffle of the fireplace with his feet down and one arm trapped between his body and the chimney wall and the other arm stuck above his head. Fire units accessed the top of the chimney via a ladder and requested additional Fire units to assist with the extrication.
In total, seventeen Firefighters responded to help with the rescue. Paramedics from West Covina Rescue Ambulance 4 started treatment of the patient while still stuck in the chimney. West Covina Fire Engine 4, West Covina Fire Truck 2 and Los Angeles County Fire USAR 103 assisted with the dismantling of the top of the chimney to the point were they were able to utilize rescue webbing and rope to pull the man from the entrapment and lower him to the ground.
Rescue was effected at 0710 hrs (7:10 AM). Patient was treated for suspected crush syndrome as a precaution and transported to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina. Patient was in custody of the West Covina Police Department for on-going investigation.
