VERIZON FIBER TO THE PREMISES PROJECT

WEST COVINA, CA - The Mayor and City Council would like to announce that as of April 2008, Verizon Communications will begin work in the City of West Covina in an effort to extend its new Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology to homes today and businesses in the near future within its coverage area. The project, which is scheduled to commence construction in early 2008, is a major step towards allowing residents to take advantage of the new FiOS (Fiber-Optic Service) Voice, Internet and Video services. With FTTP, fiber-optic cable will overlay the existing copper wire that now links homes and businesses to Verizon's network. Fiber optic cable provides faster, more reliable communications services than copper wire can accommodate. Learn more about Verizon Fios service by browsing these links.

Verizon crews, or their contractors, will be working on the FTTP Project within the public utility easement on private properties. Public utility easements were established years ago by the State of California to allow utility companies to enter private properties for the purpose of installing, maintaining or upgrading facilities. Utility easements sometimes are located 12 feet behind curb and gutter and along the frontage of the residential properties; hence the work may require removal and replacement of portions of lawn or landscape as well as removal and replacement of sidewalks and driveway within this area. Underground utility hook-up and construction activity in some areas will be required in order to lay the fiber optic cable.

Residents in the northwestern portion of the City will begin to receive notices on their front doors notifying them of when work will begin. Construction activity will transition from the north central portion of the city towards the northwestern portion by the end of 2008. The entire project will take 18-24 months to complete. The first FIOS services, starting in the northwestern portion of the city, should be available by early fourth quarter of 2008.

Contact Information:
Questions or concerns may be directed to Verizon at the number listed on the door hanger or by calling Janet Guerra, Verizon Public Relations contact for any construction concerns (909) 623-0076. Residents with questions or concerns about other aspects of the project should contact Verizon Project Manager, Laurie Aselin (909) 946-7275. You may also contact Juan Martinez, FTTP Area Manager OSP Construction at (909) 620-5249. The City of West Covina Public Works Department will monitor progress of the construction work and can be reached at (626) 939-8425.
