CITY ADOPTS BUDGET & PUBLIC SAFETY REMAINS #1 PRIORITY
WEST COVINA, CA - On June 17, 2008 the West Covina City Council adopted the City's budget for fiscal year 2008-2009. This document authorizes the funding for all City activities and programs and provides funds for services that the residents of West Covina depend on, such as, police and fire protection, youth programs and activities, lunches at the Senior Center, street maintenance, and the day-to-day operation of the City.
This year the City had to make cuts in all departments due to increasing costs of providing services to residents and the slowing economy that has impacted all cities across California. The League of California Cities (coalition of cities protecting individual city's rights) has informed the City of West Covina that the State Legislature may once again raid City revenues and public transportation funds that voters approved to balance the State of California's budget. The City of West Covina is urging residents to contact their State of California elected officials and express their support to solve the State budget crisis without impacting local cities.
Locally, the City of West Covina continues to make public safety a top priority and is investing in public safety personnel even in the City's tough budget times, including paying for paramedic training for Fire Captains and Engineers that wish to complete paramedic school. This will increase the number of paramedics on the streets of West Covina to their greatest number in West Covina's history. With the recent 5% budget cuts made in West Covina to all departments, public safety emergency response and priority calls will not be affected. "No community enjoys making tough budget cuts and the residents of West Covina should know that when they dial 911 in an emergency their police and fire department responses will not be affected in these tough times. stated West Covina City Manager Andrew Pasmant.
In addition, West Covina Fire Chief Paul Segalla added, "The mission of the West Covina Fire Department is to provide the best service to our residents. Emergency services have been and will continue to be the City of West Covina's number one priority."
