West Covina Fire Department Standards For Asphalt Kettles
Transporting
Asphalt Kettles shall not be transported on a highway, road or street when the heat source for the kettle is operating.
Exception: Asphalt Kettles in process of patching road surfaces.
Use
Asphalt kettles shall not be used inside or on the roof of a building.
Fire Protection
A minimum 20-B:C-rated portable fire extinguisher shall be located within 30 feet (9144 mm) of each asphalt kettle when the heat source is operating. A minimum 20-B:C-rated portable fire extinguisher shall also be located on roofs during asphalt coating operations.
Covers
Asphalt kettles shall be equipped with tight fitting covers.
Location
Asphalt kettles shall not be located within 20 feet (6096 mm) of any combustible material, combustible building surface or building opening. (At times a 20 ft. barrier marking may be necessary to keep the 20 ft distance in compliance)
Attendant
An attendant shall be within 100 feet (30 480mm) of kettle when the heat source is operating. Ladders or similar obstacles shall not form a part of the route between the attendant and the kettle.
Exception: Thermostatically controlled kettles.
