Post Date:09/20/2017 2:17 PM

WEST COVINA, CA, September 20, 2017 – The community is invited to join the City of West Covina at the unveiling of the Gold Star Banner in honor of West Covina resident Lance Corporal Ruben Velasco.  The banner will be unveiled at 6pm on Wednesday, September 20th.  All are invited to attend and gather in the lawn area between the LA County building and the West Covina Library (located at 1601 West Covina Parkway, West Covina, CA 91790).  The banner will be displayed on a streetpole adjacent to West Covina Parkway.  Those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early as the unveiling will occur promptly at 6pm.

In August 2017, a U.S. Marine helicopter crashed when attempting to land during a training exercise on a U.S. Navy ship off the coast of Australia.  Twenty three out of the 26 Marines were rescued at sea.  The remaining three were lost as a result of this tragic accident.  One of those lost was West Covina High School 2016 graduate and City of West Covina resident, Lance Corporal Ruben Velasco.

The City of West Covina City Council and staff were deeply saddened by the heartbreaking loss of West Covina resident Lance Corporal Ruben Velasco as well as his two fellow marines, Captain Benjamin Cross and Corporal Nathaniel Ordway.

For more information about the unveiling, please visit or contact Nikole Bresciani, the City of West Covina’s Assistant City Manager at (626) 939-8401 or at
