Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in the regular trash, as it is toxic and will pollute the environment. Universal Waste (U-Waste)

As of February 9, 2006, households are no longer allowed to place U-Waste such as batteries (AA, AAA, 6 volt, etc.), light bulbs, electronic devices and items containing mercury. That's because chemicals from Universal Waste can eventually find their way into the environment, contaminating our air, our water, and even the food we eat.

Examples of Universal Waste

Household Batteries such as Cell Batteries, Hearing Aid Batteries; Fluorescent Tubes and Bulbs and other Mercury Containing Lamps: Neon Bulbs; Mercury Containing Devices: Thermostats, Switches, Thermometer etc.

Medical Sharps (used hypodermic needles)

Beginning on September 1, 2008, State law makes it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling containers, and requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container.
HWC
The City of West Covina and LA County Public Works have partnered together to bring the Home-Generated Sharps Waste Management Program to our residents in order to help them comply with this new law. "Home-generated sharps waste" means hypodermic needles, pen needles, lancets and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for delivery of medications at home.
